Configuration in general is going the way of the dodo bird. Ideally we want to be configuration free, completely dynamic. I understand we aren't there yet, and we need to provide utilities for those things that aren't smart enough yet. Xorg is getting closer with every release, but I fear it will be a while. Most other core stuff can work fine without any configuration, there are still some outside cases that require tweaking.
