With Protel 99 SE, there are 32 signal layers, 16 power plane layers, and 16
mechanical layers available, and users "activate" (or "de-activate") these
as required. I have no personal experience with PCAD 2001, but my experience
with PCAD AD2.0, and what I have read about PCAD 2001, shows that layers can
be declared, and named, as required, and that each such layer's type can be
set as required, i.e. signal, power plane, or other (similar to Protel's
mechanical layers). And whereas the total number of usable/non-system layers
in Protel (99 SE) is 74 (the above 64 layers, plus two Silkscreen, two
Solder Mask, two Paste Mask, Drill Guide, Keep Outs, Drill Drawing, and
MultiLayer layers), the corresponding number in PCAD 2001 is 999 (up from
255 in PCAD 2000, and other previous versions of PCAD).

Geoff Harland.
