I don't know about exact timing, but, yes, that is the report. Obviously,
until an announcement is official, Protel is free to change things. But at
PCB Design Conference West 2000, we were informed that major programming
effort was going into the autorouter, and at the 2001 Conference, we heard
that release was imminent and that it was planned to be a service pack;
i.e., no charge.

However, we have also heard that the likely upgrade price from current
Protel 99SE to the next major release, probably later this year, would be
$995, which would be a small price to pay for a new router, not to mention
whatever other goodies they have in store for us. So, either way, the
future is looking bright, assuming that this router works!!!

Perhaps Mr. Schmitt's rumor is later in origin than what we have heard, but
we did understand that it would probably be this year.

Because Protel has announced a substantial price increase for 99SE,
effective July 1, from $5995 to $7995 (U.S.), my guess is that anyone who
pays the higher price will get the next release for free, and that users
who buy in before July 1 will pay $995 for the new version. It would still
work out that it will pay to buy now rather than later.

(Even better: buy a resold license for about 25% less, saving another $1500
over current prices. Look at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or contact
me.)
