I agree, and this matches my experience as well.

I install most software on my linux boxes via the package system. If I'm 
going to compile anything at all, I have to intentionally install 
further packages for the purpose.

I do prefer that the dependencies be either common or not-huge. And if 
e.g. you require Python, it's important that you not require the latest 
Python, as I may have existing apps running on an older version with no 
desire to upgrade them or juggle multiple versions.
