I think it's good when applications behave the same way across platforms, but I think it's even better when applications behave appropriate on the platform it's running on. On Windows, it is expected (as in 'defacto-standard') that *.* includes all files in the current directory. If building using MinGW makes that happen, while building with VS does not, then I say go with MinGW.
