Indeed.

My Stanford compiler tries to be portable across platforms;
due to its IBM mainframe heritage even on platforms that have "strange" character sets like EBCDIC. When I ported it to ASCII based machines in 2016, I had some trouble with case statements based on
character variables and expressions.
