Speaking as a newbie, but also more than 40 years old, I really like the interface. The black on gray makes the menus and such usable but unobtrusive, and I like the fact that I can control the illumination. It's still hard to learn (I made a few stabs with FM8), but seems much improved to me. I have no history of prior use, and therefore no memories of key commands, etc. Maybe they designed 9 to accommodate new users better.
