Dear Frameworkers, I’m writing to tell you about this new initiative from Black Zero, the home video label for Canadian experimental film that I launched back in 2023.
Black Zero Notebook is a weekly blog where I post essays, historical ephemera, and interviews focused around the history of experimental filmmaking in Canada. My hope is that, over the course of the next year, it will become a kind of coast-to-coast survey of how Canada's experimental cinema ecosystem, how it’s been shaped and where it’s going. Articles that have been posted so far include memorial tributes to the filmmakers Keewatin Dewdney and Andrew Lugg (including a new introduction and reprint of Kee’s essay "Discontinuous Films"), an essay the filmmaker Kelly Egan, an overview of Jack Chambers’s preliminary notes for The Hart of London and the unfinished CCCI, and a reprint of a Cantrills Filmnotes interview from 1974 with Tony Reif, then-programmer of the Pacific Cinematheque. https://www.blackzero.ca/blogs/black-zero-notebook There will be a new post every Monday, and you can follow us on Instagram or Facebook for updates. And if this project piques your interest, Black Zero releases are available through our online store, as well as at Re:Voir in Paris, at Bay Street Video in Toronto, at the Winnipeg Film Group, and at Lumière in Montreal.
