Developed concurrently, X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images that shaped modern conceptions of the body. Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and international artists to examine the historical, medical, and sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view were created between 1891 and 2025. *** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand, Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron Vawter. *** The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care. Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience. Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology Lead support for Overexposed was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug Pugh. ___________________________________________________________________ *September 10 - 20* Venue type: *Live, physical event* BUS Art Collective <https://us.list-manage.com/2h_UDWHYKOr?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> All day, Festival Street *The Little Free Cinema at TIFF* The Little Free Cinema is coming to TIFF September 10th-20th! Structurally, Reeves has held a daring position – at the boundaries between several forms of sexuality…; pushing the limit between sanity, obsessional memories, private madness and societal follies; at the intersection between psychological disorders, cultural artifacts and the process of obscuring/enlarging one’s vision and consciousness by accumulating layers of images on one strip of film.” –Bérénice Reynaud, SENSES OF CINEMA Upcoming Screenings Jennifer Reeves THE GLORIA OF YOUR IMAGINATION <https://us.list-manage.com/DsXBebUwORR?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> September 19 at 5:15 PM September 20 at 7:45 PM Jennifer Reeves WHEN IT WAS BLUE <https://us.list-manage.com/tarOlCI55Lo?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> September 19 at 8:15 PM JENNIFER REEVES SHORT FILM PGM <https://us.list-manage.com/hoq26CmsNcz?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> September 20 at 5:15 PM ___________________________________________________________________ *September 18 - 24* Venue type: *Live, physical event* Anthology Film Archives <https://us.list-manage.com/16uQUUyBbKJ?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> times vary, see below, 32 Second Avenue, New York, NY *RUBBLE ON SCREEN: THE CINEMA OF DEMOLITION AND DESTRUCTION* If there is one defining image of modern war, it is the pile of rubble. The spectacular nature of conflict, and its near constant presence on our screens, raises urgent questions about how destruction is depicted in popular visual media. This is particularly true within the moving image, where imagery of destruction has fascinated audiences since the cinema’s inception, beginning with the Lumière brothers’ 1895 film *DEMOLITION D’UN MUR*, in which four men demolish a brick wall, only for the footage to be reversed, causing the wall to reconstruct itself. What makes cinematic destruction so captivating may be its real-time recording of the event itself. There are also political and social implications of such a real-time moving image. Per Siegfried Kracauer, the movies were uniquely suited to reveal matters of chance, a fortuitousness which is exemplified in cinema’s depiction of the street, a site where, according to Kracauer, “the accidental prevails over the providential.” This attunement to the contingent illustrates cinema’s ability to short circuit manufactured narratives, which in the context of demolition cinema, are often spoken in the official language of “urban renewal.” It is a site where meaning flows from the material world to the camera and then to the spectator, enabling filmmakers to illustrate the complex dynamics of civilization through acts of demolition and deconstruction. This series adopts an inquisitive gaze on the depiction of material demolition and destruction across time, culture, and geography. The seven programs are organized thematically, with some pairings reflecting a shared ethos. What are the human costs of destruction? Is there a qualitative difference between “demolition” and “destruction” on screen? How and why are these images deployed, and by whom? By posing these questions, the series seeks to expand our understanding of the moving image as both an indexical medium and a site of meaning-making. Guest-programmed by Mako Fukata and Sam Schiffer, who wrote the introduction above. Co-presented by Canyon Cinema This program highlights work from Canyon Cinema’s inaugural film commissioning project. Borrowing its title from J.J. Murphy’s astounding structural showpiece, *Print Generation* (1974), and inspired by the 16mm Centenary (1923-2023), Print Generations was conceived to support analog-based filmmaking in the Bay Area. For this first iteration, three filmmakers – Tijana Petrović, Amy Reid, and TT Takemoto – were selected through an open call to create new cinematic works. No restrictions were imposed on the proposed films’ subject matter, style, or length. A commitment to working with 16mm was the only requirement. The newly created films screen here, complemented by works from the Canyon Cinema collection selected by the Print Generations cohort. Print Generations is supported by the Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation. Technical support was provided by Oakland’s Black Hole Collective Film Lab, a DIY community resource center and art studio based in West Oakland. Copies of the accompanying publication, Canyon Cinemazine #10: Print Generations, co-edited by S Topiary Landberg and Brett Kashmere, will also be available at the screening. Now considered a milestone of the American avant-garde, it was initially rejected for screening in New York because of its seemingly formless approach. The need for distributors and exhibitors who were open to the burgeoning underground film movement—decidedly non-commercial, ultra-low-budget projects that were radical in style and content and often shot on 16mm and 8mm film—led directly to the creation of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative in 1961 and Millennium Film Workshop in 1966. Both organizations, so crucial to the growth of the underground in the 1960s, are thriving today, and continue to introduce new filmmakers while honoring cinema’s rich history of personal expression. A disparate group of filmmakers who called themselves the New American Cinema Group, led by Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, Gregory Markoupoulos, and others, formed the Film-Makers’ Cooperative to distribute the work of any artist who chose to deposit their films. Its spirit was captured in a manifesto by Mekas: “We believe that cinema is indivisibly a personal expression…. We don’t want false, polished, slick films—we prefer them rough, unpolished, but alive; we don’t want rosy films—we want them the color of blood.” Five years later, Millennium Film Workshop was formed, led by Ken Jacobs, who chose the name to convey what he called “an atmosphere of possibility,” a future where “people could do their own thing.” Originally based at the St. Mark’s Church, Millennium soon set up shop on the Lower East Side, offering equipment access, work space for post-production, and weekly screenings in its ongoing Personal Cinema series. Established during a galvanizing cultural moment amid deep social unrest and change, The Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film Workshop maintain their missions today against the currents of our own turbulent era, as vital and necessary as ever. This series reflects that continuity by celebrating just some of the thousands of filmmakers whose work they have fostered, distributed, and screened. Selections will be presented in nine thematic programs: *Anticipation of the (Opening) Night*; *Roots of the NY Underground*; *Make Love, Not War*; *Seventies Structures*; *Cinemas of Transgression*; *Quotidian Pleasures*; *New York No Story*; *Diaries, Notes, and Sketches*; and *The Material Is the Message*. Linda Izcali Scobie & Chloe Ginnever *THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS*, (1966) Directed by Ida Lupino Shedding her good-girl persona in her first non-Disney role, Hayley Mills stars as Mary Clancy, a cigarette smoking prankster goofing her way through Catholic school. She meets her match in the Mother Superior (Rosalind Russell), who is not one to suffer fools, meting out reasonable punishment with a sly grin. The last film directed by Ida Lupino, *The Trouble with Angels* is a rare film portraying an almost exclusively female world in which friendship is tantamount, and mischievous girls are not seen as needing their spirits broken. Preceded by: *THE SECRET STORY*, (1996) Directed by Janie Geiser - 16mm *The Secret Story* arose as a response to several beautifully decayed toy figures from the 1930's that were given to me as a gift. These figures, and other toys, objects, and illustrations that I found from the period between the world wars, suggested a kind of unearthed hidden narrative which I have attempted to re-piece together, as if these figures were the hieroglyphics of a just-forgotten tongue. The Secret Story revolves around the central figure of the woman, and her girl-double, who look somewhat like a versions of Snow White, but also reminded me of my mother. She wanders through landscapes of rivers and floods, home and war, and memory and illness, culminating in an ecstatic walk in the forest, suggesting both the dark and cathartic trajectories of the richest fairy tales. - Janie Geiser & *THE DIVINE MIRACLE*, (1973) Directed by Diana Krumins "An intriguing composite of what looks like animation and pageant-like live action is *THE DIVINE MIRACLE*, which treads a delicate line between reverence and spoof as it briefly portrays the agony, death and ascension of Christ in the vividly colored and heavily outlined style of Catholic devotional postcards, while tiny angels (consisting only of heads and wings) circle like slow mosquitoes about the central figure. Ms. Krumins tells me that no animation is involved, that the entire action was filmed in a studio, and that Christ, the angels and the background were combined in the printing. She also says it took her two years to produce it." - Edgar Daniels, Filmmakers' Newsletter *ONGOING* Venue type: *Virtual, online event* Riverwest Radio <https://us.list-manage.com/6npO23amWkl?e=857b71a9cb&c2id=0d67e0aba7fa6a8c62b4e960fe7a49fe> streaming 24/7 *THE LONG CONVERSATION* THE LONG CONVERSATION with Xav Leplae and Stephanie Barber is on indefinite hold.
