*Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body*
The advent of cinema in the late 19th century allowed artists and
scientists to record motion for the first time. Developed concurrently,
X-ray technology extended vision beneath the skin, allowing people to view
the body’s interior. Together, these tools produced spectacular new images
that shaped modern conceptions of the body.

Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body brings together research-based
and educational films with contemporary artworks by 16 American and
international artists to examine the historical, medical, and
sociopolitical implications of seeing inside the body. The works on view
were created between 1891 and 2025.

*** Works included by Panteha Abareshi, Peggy Ahwesh, Zuza Banasińska,
Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, Theo Cuthand and Ruth Cuthand,
Anna Kipervaser, Liz Magic Laser, Barbara Hammer, Ana Mendieta, Donald
Rodney, Courtney Stephens, Agnes Questionmark, and Leslie Thornton and Ron
Vawter. ***

The show is organized into three overlapping sections. “Technology and
Power” explores how film and X-ray technologies shaped Western claims to
scientific objectivity. “Limits of the Gaze” features artists who engage
with archives and found footage, and investigate their own bodies to expose
and challenge the normative assumptions embedded in medical images. “Care
and Control” examines how imaging tools have transformed practices of care.
Overexposed invites visitors to reflect on how visualizing the inside of
the body shapes medical knowledge and human experience.

Organized by Sonia Epstein, Curator of Science & Technology

Lead support for Overexposed  was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional
generous support was provided by Romy Cohen, The Gladys Krieble Delmas
Foundation, Elaine Goldman, May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Doug
Pugh.

*Long Live the Underground!*
Celebrating Six Decades of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film
Workshop

Stan Brakhage’s 1958 silent film *Anticipation of the Night* is a kinetic
study in rhythm and color, with images that evoke the passage from
childhood innocence to adult angst. Now considered a milestone of the
American avant-garde, it was initially rejected for screening in New York
because of its seemingly formless approach. The need for distributors and
exhibitors who were open to the burgeoning underground film
movement—decidedly non-commercial, ultra-low-budget projects that were
radical in style and content and often shot on 16mm and 8mm film—led
directly to the creation of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative in 1961 and
Millennium Film Workshop in 1966. Both organizations, so crucial to the
growth of the underground in the 1960s, are thriving today, and continue to
introduce new filmmakers while honoring cinema’s rich history of personal
expression.

A disparate group of filmmakers who called themselves the New American
Cinema Group, led by Jonas Mekas, Shirley Clarke, Gregory Markoupoulos, and
others, formed the Film-Makers’ Cooperative to distribute the work of any
artist who chose to deposit their films. Its spirit was captured in a
manifesto by Mekas: “We believe that cinema is indivisibly a personal
expression…. We don’t want false, polished, slick films—we prefer them
rough, unpolished, but alive; we don’t want rosy films—we want them the
color of blood.” Five years later, Millennium Film Workshop was formed, led
by Ken Jacobs, who chose the name to convey what he called “an atmosphere
of possibility,” a future where “people could do their own thing.”
Originally based at the St. Mark’s Church, Millennium soon set up shop on
the Lower East Side, offering equipment access, work space for
post-production, and weekly screenings in its ongoing Personal Cinema
series.

Established during a galvanizing cultural moment amid deep social unrest
and change, The Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film Workshop
maintain their missions today against the currents of our own turbulent
era, as vital and necessary as ever. This series reflects that continuity
by celebrating just some of the thousands of filmmakers whose work they
have fostered, distributed, and screened. Selections will be presented in
nine thematic programs: *Anticipation of the (Opening) Night*; *Roots of
the NY Underground*; *Make Love, Not War*; *Seventies Structures*; *Cinemas
of Transgression*; *Quotidian Pleasures*; *New York No Story*; *Diaries,
Notes, and Sketches*; and *The Material Is the Message*.

Organized by Joe Wakeman, Executive Director, Millennium Film Workshop,
Matt McKinzie, Artistic Director, the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, and David
Schwartz, President of the Board of Directors, the Film-Makers’
Cooperative, with Ron Magliozzi, Curator, and Carson Parish, Associate
Producer, Department of Film, MoMA, and Julia Curl, Marron Research
Consortium Fellow, MoMA. Thanks to Steve Macfarlane, Department Assistant,

A true breakthrough and international discovery!! Here in-person with *A
Human Year Is Seven Earth Years*, Honduran-American Adrian Quetzal Randall
has cooked up an unprecedented Meso-American mystery play, an extremely
sophisticated personal cine-essay that opens up areas of speculative
history in an Adam Curtis-esque stream-of-consciousness revelation on the
military origins of Central American telecommunications and programming,
tracing a psychedelic labyrinth across four continents. Part media
archeology, part film diary, an endless montage of archival opticals
support a long-form whispered confession about the electromagnetic magick
that inflected the development of “modern” Honduran national sensibility.
Our co-hit is Riar Rizaldi's equally paranoid *Tellurian Drama*, a sublime
25-min excavation of the colonial mythos surrounding the infamous Malabar

resurrected as a tourist destination on the Indonesian island of Java.

works from the labs. A structural film that dissolves as it unfolds, a
short about crying and language, a music video, a quiet portrait of a
summer's end, and a pinhole film shot across sacred sites in Jeju.

*Mid-Air Thief, 'Moons'*, Joonhee Kim | 16mm to Digital | BW | Digital
Sound | 3min | 2024 | South Korea
A music video for 'Moons' by Mid-Air Thief

*No landscape ever made me cry*, Sujin Lee | 16mm to Digital | B&W | silent
| 5min | 2025 | South Korea
I am a crier, and this film tells stories about holding back—or not holding
back—tears. Words break down and often turn into crying, and the film tries
to explain those tears. It is also about an ambivalent attitude: being
personal while trying to maintain a distance from these emotions; wanting
to talk about crying but not quite being able to.

*Magpie Eye*, Jonathan Seungjoon Lee | 16mm to Digital | Color | Digital |
5:47 | 2026 | Jeju Island, South Korea
An analog film work that explores the immaterial realities of our world
through the lens of Korean dream journey traditions (monguyrok). Using a
16mm handmade pinhole camera, the work captures ritual sites, sacred trees,
and activist sites in Jeju Island. Like the magpie's iridescent blue that
appears beneath its seemingly black and white feathers, this work reveals
what is invisible or dismissed as unreal, offering an alternative way of
seeing and understanding the spirit world around us.

*Singing Cicada*, Boyoon Choi | 16mm to Digital | BW, Color | Silent | 6min
| 2024 | South Korea
A film made with things collected in the summer. Between moving images of a
woman shot in the summer, the wings of a dead cicada repeatedly appear.

*slice of time*, Kim Hyun-su | 16mm to Digital | B&W | Optical + digital
sound | 21 min | 2026 | Seoul, South Korea
A slice of time moves towards the end of time.

*Field Rush*, Park Kyujae | 16mm to Digital | B&W | Silent | 3 min | 2024 |
Seoul, South Korea
The camera rushes through a field of flowers.

*Glistening Seagull*, Chae Yu / super8 to digital / color / stereo / 11min
/ 2023 / South Korea
You moved as if shimmering and rippling water, and I danced above like a
seagull.

2020–2026*
This selection of Masa Kudo’s experimental animations from 2020 to 2026
explores everyday spaces, objects, memories, and time through various
handmade techniques. The works use drawing animation, puppet animation,
cyanotype, and other material experiments. TRT, 60 minutes. Additional time
for discussion / Q & A with MASA KUDO *IN PERSON*
LIMITED ATTENDANCE TO 40 - MASKS AVAILABLE
DOORS 7 PM – STARTS PROMPTLY AT 7:30 PM – FREE TO ATTEND

*Difference and Repetition and Coffee*, Masa Kudo | digital | color |
digital sound | 4 min | 2020 | Japan
A pencil-drawn animation depicting the interior of a coffee shop. Through
subtle variations and rotational repetition, the familiar space
continuously transforms, exploring the gap between our perception of time
and its actual passage

*Tokyo Cyanoghosts*, Masa Kudo | digital | color | digital sound | 3 min |
 2020 | Japan
This animation was created in response to the temporary closure of the
photographic darkroom where I worked as a workshop assistant during the
pandemic. After losing access to the space, I turned to cyanotype, a
photographic process that uses sunlight instead of a darkroom. The
animation is composed of hundreds of hand-printed cyanotypes scanned frame
by frame.

*Still Life #2*, Masa Kudo | digital | color | digital sound | 4 min |
 2021 | Japan
An animation combining acrylic paintings and found footage. Through
repetition and recombination, the film isolates the image of the coffee cup
from its original context and explores new ways of perceiving a familiar
object.

*Tracing for Traces*, Masa Kudo | digital | color | digital sound | 6 min
| 2023 | Japan
This film documents my father’s century-old family home by combining
live-action footage and animated frottage. It explores how traces left on
its surfaces carry memories of past generations.

*Jouhatsu Letters*, Johan Chang & Masa Kudo | digital | color | digital
sound | 30 min | 2024 | Taiwan, Japan
A cinematic correspondence between two filmmakers in Taipei and Tokyo,
begun during the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing until 2024. Exchanging
images and sounds, the film unfolds through animation, collage, cyanotype
and 8mm experiments, quoting one another’s materials. The result shimmers
with the joy of deeply personal cinema.

*GARAGARA*, Johan Chang & Masa Kudo | 8mm | color | silent | 3 min | 2024 |
Taiwan, Japan
A collaborative film by Masa Kudo and Johan Chang. Separated by the sea,
the artists exchanged a single roll of expired Single-8 film between Tokyo
and Taipei, layering images of their rooms through multiple exposure.

*Wait for Me at Moon Station*, Masa Kudo | digital | color | digital sound
| 4min | 2026 | Estonia, Japan
This music video was created in Estonia, where I am currently studying, and
is my first puppet animation. The animation follows the song’s lyrics,
telling the story of a girl with an 8mm film camera remembering her cat,
who is no longer with her. It was inspired by scenes from Night on the
Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa.

*INCREDIBLY STRANGE MUSIC*
Here's an aggressive critical engagement with both old and new
pop-rhetorical tropes, led by legendary beatnik re-mixer 99 Hooker! His
much-anticipated appearance here promises both wise and wise-guy versions
of the comtempo sub-pop-music scene, as well as genius patter in situ.
Avatar Pit, his real-time media delirium, is supported fore and aft by a
raft of utterly anomalous musical singularities---spontaneous musique
concrete sessions, damaged polka fragments, Troloman, Babalu, the Blob, the
Residents, Eric Burden and the Animals, Chrissie Hynde and the
Pretenders...rockin hard! AND Liberace, Spike Jones, the Mirror Man, Louis
Prima & Keely Smith, singing ostriches, and so many Other outsiders, now
centerstage in 99's upside-down musical universe!!

*Vital Signs Film Series presents The Currents + By the River*
Vital Signs is a monthly film series organized by Bay Area filmmaker and
curator Jonathan Kiefer to showcase new and recently-released,
feature-length, contemporary, independent and artist-made films that have
shown around the international film festival circuit but may or may not
have been picked up by distributors and are otherwise hard to find. Films
may feature obscure themes, unusual perspectives or eccentric material, but
they have all been sifted through the Vital Signs filter so you can be sure
they are all films worth leaving your home to see in community with
like-minded art film/film art appreciators. Screenings will take place at
Shapeshifters every first Sunday at 2pm unless otherwise noted.

Join us for First Sunday Brunch! Our café is open 11am-2pm for brunch on
first Sundays before every Vital Signs matinée film. Check our Instagram
page for updates.
