I'm sorry to report that the avant-garde film community, and the British scene in particular, has lost a valiant, witty champion. Al Rees died at home in London last Friday after a long illness. He was an inspiring teacher, insightful critic, and elegant writer—his "History of Experimental Film and Video" has deservedly been reprinted several times since it was first published in 1999. He was also a warm and loyal friend.
