For many years I have started X with: exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session mate-session It looks like after the update to 2.0, the command like parsing changed and after changing the command to your suggestion: exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session mate-session is working fine.
