Ian,
If you're using FreeBSD 9 after 2012-06-14, or FreeBSD 8 or 7 after
2012-10-09 you can use the Bmake spelling of ":U" and ":L" (:tu/:tl).

I am not aruging against you, just giving some information you may not
be aware of.
