yeah - even when starting my login manager (slim) via rc.d and having hal REQUIRED in the startup file - input devices are still not working. Only when sleeping 5 seconds before calling run_rc_commanf having all this back grounded so the boot process continues while the sleep is sleeping - only then I get a login screen where I can use keyboard/mouse.
