It's not required, you can still build, install and run xorg-server WITHOUT_HAL=yes. But you need to add a line in your /etc/xorg.conf (don't have mine at the moment, look at /usr/src/UPDATING). I think that is, in the ServerFlags section : Option "AutoAddDevices" "false" > (That would be a good reason for me not to update.) "Me too".
