Hi, with VirtualBox-4.2.20 on 10.0-RC4 I observed a similar phenomenon. "rc.d/vboxheadless start" would hang forever in _su when trying as root (tcsh) to su -m myself to check whether the VM exists with VBoxManage showvminfo. I did not find the cause since with truss it would run fine. However, I saw a message about "tty output stopped" when I would kill the _su process. Also, it works during boot. Just my 0.02$.
