Hmm..having rebuilt kernels for SMP support several times, I can't help but wonder if this is a clean install you're dealing with, or an upgrade from a previous release.

In either case, I'd cvsup your src tree with tag=RELENG_5_4, and follow the handbook kernel building instructions step by step. Putting options SMP there should work, but I don't remember if it was already there and just commented out or not. Here's what I have in my config:

# Enable Multiple CPU Support
options SMP
device apic # I/O APIC

After you have the latest sources and those two lines in your config, follow the build and install process from the handbook. Works beautfilly on all of the Poweredge servers I have here. :)

Hello,

I have a new Dell PowerEdge Dual Xeon 2.8 server and the freebsd install 'sees'
1
cpu. It loads the HT right but doesn't see the 2nd cpu at all. I went to rebuild
kernel and 'options smp' is not even a choice. I add it along with the others
that
are mentioned for smp and when I run config it says in effect, 'doesn't
understand
smp option', meaning it can't be added. Didn't think setting up smp on bsd
would be
this much trouble. Any advice? Thanks.
