First of all, I would try 6.0. It's currently in beta, but some of the changes in device probing may help you. If that doesn't help, then take a look at your BIOS settings. Toggling such settings as "plug-and-play OS" might help you get further, here, particularly with "safe mode". You could also try a source upgrade; just be careful with keeping a bootable kernel around, as you may need to experiment to get a kernel that doesn't tickle whatever is funny about your hardware. Another point would be to look to that hardware. For one thing, make sure that the acd0 drive is *really* configured and cabled as the master on the second IDE bus. And that if anything else is on the same cable, you remove it.
