When using an X terminal progrm, pick a unicode font, e.g. -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso10646-1 I don't think that the system console has unicode support, you should probably use a ISO 8859-15 font, e.g. iso15-8x16.fnt, see kbdmap(1).
