Since most of the desktops on Linux are also available on FreeBSD, you can see what they look like.I can also confirm that KDE 3.1 installs very nicely in FreeBSD 5.1-Current. The trick is setting up your xconfiguration, setting up kdm so you will have a graphical login screen, and to add the .xsession and .xinitrc files to ~/.
