Currently when I run dhclient on the console I nothing gets written to stdout, but the following message gets writen to /var/log/messages. Any thoughts ?

It usually means you have a configuration problem with the dhcp.conf file in /etc
Look through the log again, and it should tell you (reasonably) what the problem is.

Post your dhcp.conf file...
