Yes, all Athlons can use i686 code while the k6's can't. Further, without doing any scientific testing, I would think the Athlon would do better with ppro optimized code than k6 optimized code thanks to the available i686 instructions. When GCC 3.0 is used, tho, this won't be an issue since it supports optimizations for the Athlon.
