Follow-up Comment #1:

Initial version of the fix attached.

Since this requires new sprites, supplied isophex tileset fails to load with
this. hex2t seems to have now needed sprites already (arguably it was a bug
that they were not used. For a second I though about porting this fix even to
S2_5, but if our own supplied isophex has grown to rely on the bug...)

Before this can be committed, either isophex needs to be fixed, or this patch
needs to be changed so that it fallbacks to old behavior if sprites are not
present in the tileset.
I would make those sprites mandatory in 2.6, and it doesn't make much sense to
implement temporary version that has the fallback behavior this close to d3f
where temporary version cannot be used any more.
