Follow-up Comment #3, bug #24961 (project freeciv):
Pinging myself works when using localhost, fails with "Destination
unreachable: Port unreachable" when using <hostname> (no freeze). Using
traceroute reveals localhost is 127.0.0.1 as usual, and <hostname> is
192.168.1.x (ie LAN address). Entering either IP address directly works.
Various tools (getent hosts, dig, nslookup) give me different results for
<hostname> (none, 192.168.1.x, MAC address, 127.0.0.1), but none freezes, so
there must be a problem somewhere in the Freeciv stack.
Wireshark reveals remote DNS queries for <hostname>.home and <hostname>, both
of which fail. Then four (=as many as DNS queries) ICMPv6 packets for "Network
port unreachable: 5556" are sent by my computer to itself through WiFi. I get
nothing more, but it looks consistent.
Connecting to remote servers works. Connecting to LAN servers works.
[GriffonSpade reported it works (peachy=excellent) when using localhost. But
the server doesn't see anything in my case.]
