HB03-1142, now wending its way through the legislative process, would
disenfranchise a measurable percentage of the citizenry. It would place onerous,
unacceptable burdens on so-called "third parties", effectively keeping them off
the ballot. In fact, I believe that is the intention of the bill's sponsor:
de facto insurance that the two parties remain in power at all costs,
even if that cost involves trampling on voters' rights.
I realize the two major parties are less than enamored with "third
parties". They claim parties like the Libertarian party "steal" their votes,
votes they never earned or owned. Third parties are blamed for "spoiling" close
elections, as if a voter making a choice somehow spoils the process. They are
afraid - afraid we'll cost them power.
Fear is unbecoming, but duplicity is downright ugly. HB03-1142 should
go down in flames, and will, if our representatives have any sense of honor and
fair play.
