I'll have to research it. The security guy in me just gets the
heebie-jeebies over downloading random executable blobs from random (to
me) websites and running them... even on a 16 year old netbook running
FreeDOS that isn't a production machine for me. :-)
Thanks,

You can sometimes find drivers for later RealTek NICs (1GbE
especially) in vendor packaging from HP, Dell, IBM/Lenovo. You'll be
surprised what laptops, later desktops, thin clients have drivers.
ParkyTowers has a lot of links and info about hardware and drivers
that can be relevant for later hardware
(https://www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/).

Well, RealTek is certainly completely different from Atheros. And All
RTL81xx chips should run off the same drivers,. RealTek still used to
have all their drivers for all chips and all OS on their web site,
last
time I had to check for something...
Just checked again and they seemed to have cleaned up a little bit as
well, the only Fast Ethernet (100TX) chip they still have files
for is
the RTL8139, they also have a DOS disgnostic program, if that
gives you
reasonable output, the DOS driver for it should work as well...
