I am "on the fence" with moving Net to the BonusCD. You said "For me personally, networking is not essential, as luck with drivers may vary on real hardware" and I agree. I don't even run my FreeDOS system with networking when I'm on my VM at home. Networking is difficult because the hardware support just isn't there. But the situation is better on virtual hardware. So on one hand, it makes sense to put Net on the BonusCD and tell people to go install it there. On the other hand, I think most people use FreeDOS in virtual machines these days (yes, people use FreeDOS on real hardware - but looking at the numbers, most people use a VM) and it would be nice for these people to have a working network connection on a virtual machine. But it's easy for us to document that "if you want networking, also download the BonusCD .. use FDIMPLES to install the Net package group .. and that should get the network working on VirtualBox." If others think Net belongs on BonusCD, I'll accept that. > - keep archivers in live cd :-) If Net moves to BonusCD, I'm okay with moving Archivers to LiveCD. That would resolve the Zip and Unzip packages I mentioned in my first email. > - keep boot in live cd? Boot is small, but I have two issues: 1. I feel strongly that if we include it on the LiveCD, the installer should install it by default when the user selects "Install everything." Because it doesn't make sense to "Install everything" and end up with packages that didn't get installed. But: 2. The Boot tools are Romdsk and Syslinux. Who uses these tools? I don't imagine they are used by "general users" who want to install FreeDOS on an old PC or in a virtual machine. Romdsk is a "Toolkit to allow DOS to boot off ROM" and Syslinux is "Syslinux bootloader collection" and is not something that "general users" will care about. So I think Boot should move to the BonusCD. I don't think we should put it on LiveCD just because it is small .. that will lead us "by inches" to include more and more stuff on the LiveCD that doesn't really need to be there, with the argument that "this is small." > - keep A BIT of devel in live cd :-) I disagree. I think it confuses things for non-technical users to install FreeDOS and discover "oh, there are a few developer tools on there .. but it's not much, I guess FreeDOS stopped supporting developer tools." They won't think to look in the BonusCD for the "other" developer tools, because they already found Devel on the LiveCD. I prefer to move Devel to the BonusCD so it's consistent. If you're a developer, there are lots of other useful tools there too, so it makes sense to keep all that together. > - keep edit in live cd :-) > - consider moving vim to BONUS? I disagree. See above about Devel. I think we should keep packages in a group together, not include some editors on LiveCD and some on the BonusCD. But think about who uses these editors. Almost all of the editors in Edit are aimed at programmers -- or at least, more technical users. If you're a general user and you need to edit FDAUTO.BAT or FDCONFIG.SYS, the FreeDOS Edit program will do the job just fine. It's easy to use. > - add fltk to gui :-) I'm not much of a fan of GUIs on FreeDOS, these days. But I recommended moving GUI to the BonusCD, so whether or not we include FLTK apps in GUI is less of an issue for me. But I'd like to defer the conversation of "should we include FLTK" until after at least *one* Test release with the new package group organization. > - add vsbhda and/or sbemu to sound! I think it would be nice to include some kind of virtual SoundBlaster emulator so people can get sound from classic DOS games when running on AC97 or later hardware. I think we've discussed this in another thread previously, and I asked the same question there but didn't get an answer: Which virtual SoundBlaster to include? You're advocating for "vsbhda and/or sbemu" and if those are good, I think we should include them. I don't think they belong in Sound, though. That group contains programs that play sound. Instead, I think "vsbhda and/or sbemu" belong in Drivers -- which I recommended to put on the LiveCD. > - keep sound in live cd :-) > - keep unix in live cd ;-) > - move clam antivirus with db to BONUS! > - keep util in live cd :-) I disagree on these. The Unix and Util groups are the most obvious to put on the BonusCD. These contain lots of extra stuff that most general users will not be very interested in. More technical users would probably be interested in the Unix tools .. but these more technical users are also more likely to be interested in other things on the BonusCD anyway. Same for the Util stuff. ClamAV is already part of Util, so that would keep it on BonusCD by default. I believe really, Really, REALLY strongly that package groups need to go entirely on one or the other CD images. I don't believe it makes sense to put "some of _ group" on the LiveCD" and "some of _ on the BonusCD" because that just confuses things about "what CD do I need to install _?"
