for testing, a very similar patch, please try

Hi Jeremy:
Well, that kernel works on the "deranged Dell" laptop IF booted
from a memory stick with an MBR (set up like a hard disk). It
CORRECTLY boots to a C:\> prompt, C:\> IS the stick, and the
D: and E: partitions from the HD are correctly identified! Yay!
It DOES NOT work on a memory stick in "superfloppy" format...without
an MBR. :-(
Partitioned (with MBR) boot:
.............123Bootdrive from BIOS/bootsector is 0x80 (press 'C' key)
C: HD1, Pri[ 1], CHS=0-1-32, start = 0MB, size = 120MB
D: HD2, Pri[ 3], CHS = 1919=0-1, start = 15053MB, size = 478MB
WARNING: partition Ext:1 FS 0B is not LBA
[...]
E: HD2, Ext[ 1], CHS = 1980-1-1, start = 15531MB, size = 22520MB
Boots to C:\> prompt (the stick). D: and E: correct!
"Superfloppy" without MBR
FreeDOS123Bootdrive from BIOS/bootsector is 0x80 (press 'C' key)
C: HD2, Pri[ 3], CHS = 1919-0-1, start = 15053MB, size = 478MB
WARNING: partition Ext[ 1] FS 0B is not LBA
[...]
D: HD2, Ext[ 1], CHS = 1980-1-1, start = 15531MB, size = 22520MB
It then starts reading config.sys from C:, which is an MSDOS
installation, starts MSDOS command.com from C: and boots to C:\>
prompt. DIR C: shows the MSDOS partition on HD2, DIR D: shows the
extended partition, DIR A:/DIR B: fails, DIR E: says "No volume label"
and then fails.
The stick is nowhere to be found!
Hope this helps. I'll try the "crazed compaq" when I get a chance.
