Your suggestions are mostly "userspace", so let us discuss your suggestion on freedos-devel, not on freedos-kernel. You do suggest "device files", but remember that the kernel already has that: Device files like LPT1 are in no particular directory - they can be opened in any directory :-). You can add devices by loading drivers during boot or, with DEVLOAD, even from the command prompt.
