I agree with you that what we want is source code or at least detailed
specifications.  However most manufacturers are a long way away from
that right now.  I think that if they begin the process of looking into
providing linux drivers they are likely to find it a lot easier and less
expensive to release their specs to the community.
We are considering changing the petition to remove the reference to the
binary drivers and also to make it an "Open Source Drivers Petiton".
