Hello,
I've been getting more and more enthused about Freenet since version 0.3.4-2
and I would like to do more with it. I've downloaded and uploaded and I
think it's a good thing your project is doing. I've come to the point where
I need to ask a number of questions though, so if you could bare with me I'd
appreciate it. My questions are as follows:
1) I'm still on version 0.3.4-2 but I've downloaded the setup files for
0.3.5 and 0.3.6. Is it ok to install newer versions without uninstalling my
current version?
2) I'm running Freenet under a Windows environment and I notice with every
download that some files are created which seem to be temp files, but I
wonder if it's alright to delete them or if the files are needed for
something. If I pass some file names and locations will you be able to tell
me which one's are ok to delete? Here are two DOS outputs of the file types
I question, from two different directories, taken from the same
time/download:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directory of D:\Program Files\Freenet
11/26/00 05:13p 19 t1617f675
Directory of D:\Program Files\Freenet\.freenet\2626
11/26/00 05:13p 38 t4138596
11/26/00 05:13p 78 t4138596.inf
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) How can we get rid of corrupted content as it could still be continually
requested, hence continue to exist? I tried to get a zipped file and it
downloaded ok, but it wasn't a valid file and my extraction software(s)
wouldn't open it. Perhaps the "owner" of the key can remove if there is a
means of contacting him or her anonymously. Will the owner ever be able to
remove content? The way I see it bad Internet content is bad Internet
content and a waste of time, so why would they want to keep it on Freenet?
By the way I found an uncorrupted version of the file, tried to re-finsert
and I got the "key already exists" error, so that works! To be specific the
key is
"KSK@/books/j_k_rowling/book4_harry_potter_and_the_goblet_of_fire_doc_.zip."
I did the next best thing and inserted the key
"KSK@/books/j_k_rowling/book4_harry_potter_and_the_goblet_of_fire_txt_.zip"
right "under" it.
I agree with the current situation of Freenet, there needs to more content,
but the content should work!
4) Ok, now don't laugh, but I'd like to help if I could. I'm a novice
programmer but not good enough for programming help I think. Because of
this fact I didn't even look at the code yet, but perhaps I can help in
other ways. Foremost I would really like to write, and I think I write well
if you need that. I also have the ability to test software or perhaps my
modest web design skills could be of some use. I do not use WYSIWYG crap, I
do all web stuff from text editors. Please let me know if there's anything
I can do at this time. Do you think there is?
Thank you gentlemen, I like what you do.
Good Night!
