i don't think that it will change anything. if you produced the certificates with the scripts of adam, they are probably alright and similar to all the others (for winxp add the extensions needed - see the eap/tls howtos by ken rosner or raymond mccay for further details)
i looked up the conf of xsupplicant, it should be:
id - your identity cert - your client certificate (typically a der file) key - your client's private key (typically in a pem file) root - the certificate of your ca (ex. root.pem) auth - set it to EAP
please provide debug logs of your server. i have difficulties to say now what's going wrong and at which point of time.
