That seemed to work.

In case others are interested: in 1.3.17 you have to define "HIGHFIRST" if
you are compiling for a big endian arch (ppc in my case).
I added "-DHIGHFIRST"  to CFLAGS in the makefile, rather than hard-code it
in md5.c.
