In this case the problem most likely is with the Virtual Machine (VM), which needs to get access to the hard disk. You should be able to make a folder on your host system (the physical machine) available to the VM system somehow in the VM software. It should not matter which harddisk that folder is on. This is sometimes called 'mounting' the folder. Once you can see the folder inside the VM, FreeSurfer will also be able to see it. Good luck!
