It is perfectly OK to put Codec2 and the FDM modem in a proprietary
product because they are under a license that allows that. You must do
certain things to comply with the license, like providing the source
code to our part of the program to others on request, but you are not
required to provide the source for your part of the program. I can
explain all of the steps necessary to comply with the license if a
business situation comes up.
We're not really insisting that business people become part of the Free
Software community to use Codec2.
Although I do this sort of consulting to make a living, I will give
advice to people about combining Codec2 and proprietary code without
charge, as part of making sure that everyone does comply with the
license and that the community remains harmonious.
The FreeDV application, unlike Codec2, is under GPL. But even that could
be, for example, connected to a proprietary SDR program through its
sound card emulation and shipped on the same CD.
As part of my professional consulting, I have told many companies how to
combine GPL and proprietary software. It's just a matter of making sure
that the interface between the two pieces is not one that would make the
proprietary code a derivative work of the GPL code.
Thanks
Bruce
