In a word, "yes". The next three paragraphs can be ignored, they're
just rationalization... skip to the bottom paragraph for the real content.

Likely not for you or anyone else, but the ability to solve this type of
problem is exactly why I use open source. With a closed source product,
I would have two options: reconfigure my entire system to meet the
restrictions placed on it by one program that I want to use, or stop
using the program.

Because FreeDV is open source, I have another option, spend a few hours
doing something I enjoy (ie: programming) and in the end, have something
that doesn't have a restriction that impacts me. If one or two other
people benefit from it, good for them, but I get something which
measurably better meets my needs in exchange for me having fun with two
of my hobbies simultaneously.

Anyway, I don't mean to preach to the choir about open source. It's
enough for me that the only two options I'm seriously considering are
fixing my problem or not using FreeDV, and since I will enjoy playing
radio and programming at the same time, I'll fix it whether it's a good
use of my time or not. :-)

Ok, I'll keep the code working as it does now for the two soundcard
case, and only create additional streams when there's an oddball setup
like mine. Easier to keep a working design than try to test all
possible corner cases of one that already works for everyone. Thanks for
the information.
