Indeed, lots of CPU there on phones.

I've looked at some recent papers[1][2][3]  on Neural speech synthesis
and much to my surprise some of the latest research uses sinusoidal +
noise models like Codec 2, and claim big drops in CPU.

So it's possible the CPU load will drop in time, perhaps down to that
available on commodity ARM chips.
