Obviously everybody gets to do what they wish. But having run a project
like that which failed, at at least 10 thousand dollars in expense and the
main hardware engineer doesn't even talk to me any longer, I suggest that
starting small is a really good idea. To that end, I have bought a few of
the MD-UV380 radios involved and am modifying them (it's just 3 wires), and
will flash the new firmware. This effort may arrive at something that works
a whole lot like what you want to make - at which point you might decide
how to improve it.
