I have a hunch about this, though I'm not certain.  I committed what I
hope is a fix.  It's pretty untested.  Give it a try and let me know
what I broke or fixed. :)

I can't think of anything that would cause this.  Are you sure it's a
second process and not a thread?  What is this breaking in practice?
(i.e. what are the symptoms of the problem.)
