My HTPC rig (as I expect that of many others) are heavily used by the rest of the family so actual screen time (i.e. non-ssh access to the machine) is rare, and downtimes are not appreciated. If memory serves, there were issues with kaa.$something (from svn) either having deps issues of its own, and/or not being able to run alongside the kaa.$someting-$version needed by the trusty 1.9.0 we run here.
The net effect is that even considering testing/contributing to the 2.0 is (or at least was at the time) incompatible with family used freevo. Getting official releases of all relevant sw units (freevo-2.x, kaa*, ...) is, imho, the number one thing to get the 2.0 track rolling forward. Even if it has a pile of missing features and bugs, get it out there so there can be more eyeballs on it (and the distros can pick it up). You can always make new releases later with the fixes etc. I know from personal experience that "have not made a release in x years == dead upstream == let's drop it" is how distros behave (having seem nmh and exmh vanish recently). Just releasing _something_ keeps you on the right side of this border If poper releases are made (and packaged by distros) I/we can use the package managers to go back and forth between stable and testing releases and hence provide useful testing feedback to the hackers.
