Are you sure the # wasn't added later, after the event had passed? That's what happens on mine.
Alan- where does root's mail go? Is it redirected to another user? Try mailing root and see where it goes. I wonder if you've got error messages somewhere else. If you don't redirect cron somewhere they go to mail. If you redirect root's mail to alan, then check alan. Try taking out the '#' and set the date to sometime in the future, because otherwise, the command looks fine.
