Hm, yes, that appears to work.

Unfortunately, it also makes doing what I want to do rather complicated,
as I have to convince mplayer to talk to lirc and pay attention to it
(which isn't going very well: lirc reports a client connection, .lircrc
looks about right to me, but mplayer ignores keypresses.  But it's
also ignoring -slave mode commands, so not sure whats up...)

Anyway, thanks for the pointer.  I think I'm going to have to figure out how
to get mplayer.py to do "<prog> | mplayer -" when it sees a filename with
a "|" in it, or something like that.  Or just wait for the next release
of tvtime, though the pipe thing could be more generally useful.
