Hi dave, I had the same problem, i changed the config for mencoder in local_conf.py to make it use /dev/dsp2 instead of /dev/dsp0, from then on it worked!

At any rate, some futher experimentation found the streamer (comes with xawtv) records the sound fine, so I'm about to start playing with hooking streamer into freevo and seeing how that holds up.
