You can buy a perfectly capable nvidia card new for $40. Probably half that if you want to get something used. This I assume you mean that GL works flawlessly on Linux, here. I seem to recall there were still some problems with fragment programs, which are needed for hardware colorspace conversion (which is absolutely a requirement when dealing with 1080p material). I suspect it's just a matter of time before that gets sorted out. But maybe it already has been sorted out, and I'm operating on old information. :) In any case, it does require at least an X3000.
