irw listen events on /dev/lirc, so you need a symbolic link /dev/lircd/0 called /dev/lirc, or
you could use:

irw -d /dev/lirc/0

In this case, it is normal, because you killed lircd.
Well, the hardware seems to be ok. I don't know why irw doesn't work... :(
