As I understand it, Freevo doesn't really have a "backend" so to speak. The GUI is mainly a front end to load up movies in Xine or MPlayer. As for recording, I would guess that would really depend on how you have that setup and what format it records in. I wouldn't see that Freevo really needs a backend to serve up content. My suggestion would be to go with one of the media boxes that support a wide variety of formats and NFS or SMB shares, like the WD TV Live or the Logitech Revue (among others). The way I have my home network setup is one central server with multiple hard drives in RAID configuration with the directory that contains my media files shared out both via Samba and NFS to the local network. In some rooms, I have old computers with Freevo setup that NFS mount the directory from the central server and play the files. In other rooms, devices like a WD Live Plus uses the Samba share to index and play the files. I'm not sure if this 100% answers your question, but hopefully it might help.
