I just changed the line to
"wl join $IF_WIRELESS_SSID imode ibss"
# iwconfig "$IFACE" mode ad-hoc
After a commit and a reboot the box is reachable... Really a bad typo....

Seems to be a typo in the script. For me
wl join <SSID> imode ibss
works!
Please test this!
