How do you do fields with leading TABs then?

We _could_ set some kind of upper variable name length,
either 15 or 23, and then strip the first 2 or 3 tabs,
and the tab in the first line to align it to column
16 or 24, respectively. (Longer variable names don't
make sense anyway.)

I strongly agree here. We had something more shell-like
in mind originally, with = and <<, but this is more simple.
