Hi, HEAD is working now!
I checked out a fresh copy of freewrt and compiled with default settings. Now it worked. Looks like my copy was corrupted somehow. I wonder how this happen and even after "svn up" and "make clean" the old copy failed to work. I have (almost) no local changes. Thank you. It is always good to know, there is someone out there, who has an ear, if something is not working as expected. I hope than FreeWRT will continue development some day. It is a really nice system and it would be a pity if it disappears.
