Hi again,

the "ls /" problem making the system hang as well as any other carefully described, deterministic problems with missing files automagically resolved after I patiently reflashed the device three times over and over. The ASUS "Firmware Restoration" utility for Windows was always used.

My deep apologize for wasting FreeWRT resources and once again thank Waldemar for fast helping hand.

An off-topic comment to lesson learned: Actually, some time ago I had similar problem with LG's MP3 player (MF-FE505) with flashable firmware - every three months the device started to "sound weird" - just like if the MP3 decoder was slightly corrupted (like if D/A converter started to play 8bit or 4bit or sometimes like if antialiasing filters didn't work). The remedy: patiently reflash the firmware from the enclosed CD. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to succesfully claim this problem with the vendor. This is quite scary. If this has happened to me with two devices plus if the future of computing is to move from unreliable mechanical parts to even more unreliable flash EPROMs, where is this civilization heading to? :-(
